I’ve always been captivated by technological revolutions. There’s something exhilarating about witnessing a paradigm shift, a moment when the world is fundamentally altered by innovation. I remember the first time I held an iPhone, realizing that it wasn’t just another phone—it was a device that would redefine communication, connectivity, and even society itself. Similarly, when I first encountered LLMs like ChatGPT, I felt that same spark. The ability to communicate with software through human-like conversation wasn’t just an improvement in AI; it was a revolutionary leap forward.

For me, a revolution is that pivotal moment when you can draw a clear line between the “before” and “after” of a technology’s introduction. It’s when the game changes entirely. But what happens after the revolution? That’s where evolution comes in. Evolution is the process of maturing, refining, and broadening the impact of a revolutionary technology. It’s the phase where initial excitement turns into widespread adoption and continuous enhancement, ensuring the technology’s long-term value.

SASE: A Revolutionary Vision

The journey of Secure Access Service Edge (SASE) mirrors this pattern of revolution followed by evolution. When Cato Networks first envisioned SASE back in 2015, we recognized that the traditional ways of managing networking and security were failing. The complexity was overwhelming, the costs were skyrocketing, and businesses were struggling to keep pace with the demands of digital transformation. It was clear that a revolution was needed—a fundamental rethinking of how networks and security should operate in the cloud era.

In 2016, Cato introduced this revolutionary vision to the world. We proposed that networking and network security could no longer be treated as separate entities. Instead, they needed to converge into a unified, cloud-native platform. This approach wasn’t about incremental improvement; it was about rebuilding from the ground up to solve the problems of complexity and inefficiency that plagued traditional solutions.

By 2019, this vision had gained significant traction. Gartner recognized and named the category “SASE,” acknowledging the revolutionary potential of what Cato had started. But as with any true revolution, the initial spark was just the beginning.

The Evolution of SASE: Following in Cato’s Footsteps

In the years that followed, many vendors entered the SASE market, eager to capitalize on the momentum Cato had created. However, it’s important to note that while these vendors contributed to the broader adoption of SASE, they didn’t introduce anything fundamentally new. They were all following the path that Cato had already paved. The real work, the real innovation, was in how Cato continued to evolve SASE, adding layers of functionality and robustness to the platform.

At Cato, we understood from the start that the benefits of converging networking and network security into a cloud platform went beyond just solving immediate problems. It was about creating a foundation for future innovation. We didn’t stop at the initial concept. Instead, we’ve consistently pushed the boundaries of what SASE can achieve, ensuring that our platform evolves to meet the growing and changing needs of our customers.

Leading SASE Beyond Revolution

Today, Cato is leading SASE through its evolutionary phase, adding capabilities that continue to bring tangible value to our customers and partners. Recent announcements like Extended Detection and Response (XDR) and Endpoint Protection Platform (EPP) integrations are prime examples of how we’re taking SASE to the next level. These enhancements are not just about adding features; they are about ensuring that our platform remains relevant and powerful in the face of new challenges and threats.

Our approach has always been to stay ahead of the curve, anticipating the needs of our customers before they even arise. By continuously evolving our platform, we’re ensuring that Cato’s SASE Cloud Platform remains not just a product, but a critical component of our customers’ long-term IT strategy.

A Privilege to Be Part of the Journey

Looking back, I feel fortunate to have been part of both the revolution and the evolution of SASE. It’s one thing to witness a technological shift; it’s another to be involved in shaping it. At Cato, we’re not just following trends—we’re setting them, and in doing so, we’re helping to define the future of networking and security.

As SASE continues to evolve, I’m excited to see where this journey will take us. One thing is certain: Cato will remain at the forefront, leading the charge, just as we always have.
