The ABB FIA Formula E World Championship is an all-electric single-seater racing series. The first Formula E race took place in 2014. Since then, it quickly gained popularity and became an audience favorite.
Formula E races take place globally, in Mexico, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, India, Brazil, Germany, Monaco, Indonesia, the US, Italy and the UK. They host leading motor brands, such as: Porsche, Jaguar, Maserati, McLaren, and Nissan.
The main difference between Formula 1 and Formula E is Formula 1 uses hybrid cars with internal combustion engines powered by more conventional fuels, whilst Formula E racing cars are fully all-electric. In fact, Formula E is the only global all-electric racing series. The use of electric vehicles is a key component of its sustainability program, which boasts net zero carbon footprint by reducing championship footprint and offsetting any emissions.
Formula E also tends to race around street circuits in major cities, whereas Formula 1 typically takes place at racing circuits. Although, both series don’t always follow this blueprint.

2023 is Season 9 of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.

The Formula E cars do share the same type of chassis, battery, and tires. However, each team is free to develop other parts of the car such as an electric motor, or gearbox. For example, the latest Gen3 car was designed by engineers and sustainability experts for swift street racing. It is also net zero carbon.
These differences, or lack thereof, make the races more exciting! With all vehicles using the same battery, the outcome of the race is much less predictable. Formula 1 races, on the other hand, host vehicles that vary in their capabilities from the get-go, making it easier to anticipate who will win.
The purpose of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship is to help accelerate change towards an electric future, according to the sport’s sustainability mission statement, “one race and one city at a time.” Sport is a powerful tool to share “powerful and meaningful” messages with the world.
Formula E is a sport that goes the extra distance and demonstrates in real terms what all-electric mobility vehicles are capable of when partners and experts come together to innovate and compete.
Formula E is a sustainability leader. It became the first global sport to be certified with a net zero carbon footprint from inception. This is thanks to its three-step sustainability program. First, Formula E monitors and calculates the championship’s carbon footprint. Then, actions are taken to minimize carbon footprint. This includes the use of electric vehicles, optimizing travel, and more. Finally, unavoidable emissions are offset, through projects like biogas energy generation in China, landfill gas energy generation in Mexico, and wind power energy generation in Morocco.
Formula E-Prix races have a set amount of laps dependent on the track plus extra laps added at the end for any safety car laps that occur.
